Party Like a Four Year Old

Posted by Kateri

A party custom designed by Donovan: Pizza joint. Lotsa games. Hey dad, gimme the money.
I just can't believe we have a FOUR year old.
4.
Four.
Yep, that would be all your fingers minus your thumb, four. Wow. We are proud, amazed, sad, and wondering where the time went! He is no longer a baby- just our big, independent doing, thinking, talking, little man.

So, at his request, we descended on Peter Piper's Pizza with our throng of family for some good old fashioned token-enhanced fun:)

Little man's dream world. Lights & buttons....and LOTS of them!!!!

Avery is great at bopping things. Just ask Donovan. And our cat.

Cool mom....there's dinosaurs on my cake!

Ok...this is the funny part. My little man is such a good sport! In my frantic last minute gathering of decorations, cake, plates, gifts, etc.....the one thing that didn't make it to the car was the candles. Donovan is the KING of candle-blowing, with this huge family celebrating bdays every other week, he sneaks in a takes care of everyone's candles for them. So when we got ready to sing and I realized we were candle-less....I did all I could to come up with them on the spot....scanned the room at the other little parties....dang it, they used number candles (I don't think a 2 would have looked as cool on his cake:)

Anyway, he looked at the cake funny and asked for the candles.....I was just honest with him, telling him I forgot them at home. I guess by now he is used to his mom's blondeness and shrugged it off like it was nothing! I still felt guilty so I asked..."can you just pretend to blow out candles??" Well, he did, with the same pro finesse he always has;) Ahhhh. So big boys really don't cry:) Crisis averted. Imaginary candles blown out. Wishes granted.

New crisis: Brother at 3 o'clock. He's in, he's out. He got a good chunck of frosting. If candle-blowing is Donovan's thing, taking big obtrusive licks of cake icing is Avery's. Everywhere we go, weddings, showers, birthdays, doesn't matter what or where, but he makes sure he gets the first taste of every gooey topping:) I love Donovan's expression tho....its just like, "c'mon man, gimme a break - I only turn four once!"

I don't see any remorse on this face.....do you???

Its present time.....and it looks like Uncle Sam picked the right gift from the right aisle in Toys R Us!!
Grandpa showing the boys how its done.

And then they take matters into thier own hands. I never realized this was a team sport!

Four years old.....but every bit a boy. There is more than one way....to ride a carousel!

Foam-antics

Posted by Kateri

Daddy brought home some foam from work for mommy- she needed it to line her camera gear trunk. Turns out she didn't need the pieces with the stars cut out, so we got to play play play with them to our hearts content! Daddy tells us these are what the Blackhawk modules are packed in.....but we don't care, we think they have TONS of uses.....as we exhibit below:

A: Juggling

B: Confinement
Woops....
Ok....new plan...
Starrey Eyed...
C: Modern Art...
No joke. They built this one and called it: "Potty a la Mod." My hopes that they will be successful engineers are fading with the realization that they may just be eccentric artists;)

MY Turn;)

Posted by Kateri

Okay, so I am working with my assistant, April to teach her techniques so that she can step it up and be a reliable second shooter for my weddings. She already has an impeccable creative eye and together we read eachother's minds! So I decided there was no better opportunity to get her comfortable behind the camera than to get me in front of it. I need new headshots and blog/site ready images for my profiles, so this really was the perfect opportunity to have a great time and get some much needed material.
We decided to go for the edgier/high fashion side of things...I did not want anything "typical" in a headshot...but just anything that screams edgy, artsy & fun...because that is the style of photogrphy I am aiming for in this business, anyway....little by little.
Here's a few of my favorite shots. Kudos to my wonderful assitant.....rockstar work, A!!!!

We did not plan this shot...we were at an abandoned building downtown and turned a corner to find the message there as if it was written for us. Love it. Too bad though the original "artist" was off by a vowel:)

The final plus to doing this was getting a fresh take on the other side of the lens...reminding me of what you- my clients- endure to get "the shot." Heat....bright sun in eyes....heat....trying to get my body & mind to cooperate to get a pose right...heat....flying cows.....FLYING COWS????.....oops, no, that was a mosquito, my bad. Anyway, it was an experience likened to that of a surgeon having surgery...a bit hard to let go of control at first, but an experience that will only help me identify with clients during upcoming shoots.
What a team....thanks April!
PS....A: You are next:)

Moments Divine

Posted by Kateri

Its rare I get to photograph a non-wedding event...but this past weekend I had the priviledge of lending my photo talents to a friend's baby shower to document this amazing time in her life. Of course at a baby shower there are ineveitably BABIES....and this wee one in particular was just irrestistable. Thats momma kissing her while a doting Auntie cradles her. Priceless.

Well, thank you all for being so patient with me this week as my site has been down due to the brand new web design transfer! Your patience was well worth the wait I hope. You should experience a faster more streamlined website with easier client logins and faster preview uploads. I can't say the site is anywhere near "done" but it is functioning and that is the most important factor. The actual design I am still playing with. I haven't fully "hit it" but am getting closer in the branding dept. So the site is up and running for good- but you may log in from time to time to experience color & style changes.

All current client proofing galleries are up and running. If you can't login to yours, forgot your password, etc- please contact me right away and I will help solve the problem.
Any suggestions as I mentioned before are more than welcome. This is certainly a work in progress.

I know it is silent right now, but I am working on tracking down some royalty free music to enhance the ambiance.

All in all....this new website building business was nothing short of a space shuttle launch....I hit one glitch after another (generally self-inflicted in my less than adequate comp savviness:) - but finally through the wonderful one on one help of my template provider I was able to launch.
We have liftoff. Just in time for this Saturday's wedding.
Hooray!

Web Transformation in Progress....Patience Please

Posted by Kateri

I am in the process of designing a BRAND NEW WEBSITE! Woohoo! I have spent a great deal of time searching for the perfect template to showcase an all new image. I finally found the perfect fit through FlashPalette, and the website is almost ready to launch!

Over the next few days, please be patient if you encounter a downed server. I hope to make a quick and painless transition, but it is an intense process for this one-woman-show:) Once the new site is up and functioning, you will be able to navigate a whole new experience with smart-uploading albums and a clean open format. There is even the capability of hosting individual songs per client, per album! Total customization. I love it- thats what I am all about:)
So, just hang on and please contact me if you are in any immediate need of previewing a gallery or with any other inquiries. While it is very user friendly, the new site may have its kinks to work out, so please feel free to contact me with any quesions/suggestions.

Finally, I am uploading all of my current *active* clients to the site- all original login username & passwords will remain the same- however, if you cannot access your album(s), please contact me right away and I will walk you through it or reactivate your album if necessary.

Thanks for your patience as I transform my webspace! I hope you enjoy the final result.

Ciao-
K

Big Dipper.....Help me shoot your best wedding moments

Posted by Kateri

Certainly one factor that can repeatedly shoot a photog in the foot is the good old time/place scenario. As a "single shooter", I have control over only one shooting spot at a time, and while much of wedding photography is relatively predictable, there are always those moments where I have no control over where you end up in my line of fire.

BUT YOU DO. I will stick to the classic first dance example here. They sashae across the floor in perfect romantic sync, but then comes the grand finale...the groom dips the bride......
and his back is to the photographer. The moment is gone, and all I got was a shot of the groom's coattails blocking the glory of the shot. So...plan ahead....work into your dance gameplan an awareness of me (the one with the giant lens and flash pointed at you:)....and direct all the grace and beauty of that fantastic moment in my direction PLEASE. As always throughout the wedding day I will be in constant communication, and I will ask this of the groom before he sets out on that momentous first dance, but explaining this scenario ahead of time may just get you thinking on that level throughout the whole wedding. I will be with you every moment of your wedding day...and while I am still working on the bi-location thing, you would get a whole lot more of those breathtaking shots you hired me for if we enter into the whole process as a collaborative effort together.

Just food for thought as you head towards your own walk down the aisle.
Happy Planning!

Lights, Camera.........ACTIONS

Posted by Kateri

Okay....I have been waiting for this day for a long long long time now. I took ACTION. Well, actually I bought some......ok, let me explain:

What many of you don't know about the art of photography in this digital age, is that the great shots captured in a photo shoot are more about composition...and therefore only the BEGINNING of breathtaking art.....the true magic happens in the digital darkroom, where through the wondrous capabilities of Photoshop CS3, each picture can be transformed from "nice pic" to "STUNNING MASTERPIECE."
Most of you probably have no idea what a Photoshop "action" is....basically its a collective set of pre-programmed elements that combine together for one-click enhancement options. Now a lot of Photoshop pros have blessed the digital photography world with their way cool sets of "actions" available for purchase. (Thanks to Photoshop...computer nerds are now superheros of the art world!....just pretty much the coolest people ever:)
Anyhoo, I just purchased downloaded a new action set from Boutwell Studios and it definitely was the best purchase I could have ever made. Nearly 50 actions = endless possibility.

Check these out.......

This is just a tiny two-take taste of the magic that can be performed! I am so excited.....and I hope you are too! Watch for updates!

First Look...

Posted by Kateri

My new demo album is on its way. Ever since their May 15th wedding, I have been hard at work processing the more than 900 photos and finally designing a breathtaking album for Cass & John. This will be my newest demo album- an Asuka Laminate EX 11x12.5- monogramed signature Asuka black box and all. Here is a sneak preview of what a little creativity can achieve. These are three full page spreads I designed....you will have to add your own imaginary gutter line down the center of each page:)

Yes....these two pages feature ghosted actual photos of their wedding day- not just a random background.

A word about John & Cass....
  • Yes, she's my sister.
  • Did she get special treatment? Of COURSE...she IS my sister. But she also had to put up with me as her demanding oldest sis using her wedding day for personal gain:) Lol.
  • YES...she gets the award for 2008 weddings- their wedding was in the most absolutely gorgeous setting- Front Royal, VA...and a dreamy LUSCIOUS & COOL change from our arid southern landscape. (I AM ALL FOR THE DESITNATION WEDDINGS:)
  • I spent no more time (shooting) with them than I would for any other couple within the Gold, Diamond or Platinum Package coverage.
  • Great photography was a priority for them, and their images show it. John even got the top hat and cane just for me. (Thank you, John!!!)
  • They are a shining example of how personality & self expression, along with the time to embrace the available natural light....make for an incredible set of moments that they will be able to relive for the rest of their lives together.
  • The downside for Cass having her sister shoot her wedding......???? A weepy photographer can't focus her lens!!! Emotions have their place at weddings, but behind the camera they are certainly a menace. I was actually doing okay until the toasts started:) I still have 3 sisters and 3 brothers to follow down the aisle....but no matter how hard I try I know there will be tears at their weddings too. Oh well- I may be a pro but I am a human with a wonderfully beautiful family first, and so a few blurry shots are a small thing compared to having the honor of documenting each sibling's most important life moments!
Congratulations to my sis and new brother, now an old married couple....celebrating one month now!

God Blessed Texas.....

Posted by Kateri

Well God did bless Texas.....but most of us probably feel that Corpus Christi was a little left out of the scenic views & architecture the rest of Texas cities may boast. However, after this photo shoot, you may see Corpus Christi in a whole new light.

I had the great pleasure of celebrating the upcoming wedding of Brian & Allyson through a couple's photo session set in our downtown area. We intended to take advantage of the urban setting, so we parked off of Water Street and walked around three blocks between Water & Chapparal. I had certain places pre-set in mind, but we also enjoyed the spontenaity that the downtown scenery had to offer.

Their warm personalities and obvious love for eachother won over the heat, you would never know by looking at the shots that these were taken in the Texas June heatwave.

Here is a sneek preview below....can you guess where these spots are located???

By the way...kudos on the wardrobe! Bold & colorful, yet simple and non-distracting. They are both comfortable and unrestrained....free to be themselves and express their love!!!

We found the "Sweet Spot"

It was a blast! ......and I think only the tip of the iceberg on how many fabulous backdrops downtown Corpus Christi provides. For all of you looking forward to the urban setting for your photo shoots, get ready to have fun!!!! .......I can pretty much guarantee you on your own couple's photo session, you will fall more in love not just with your significant other, but also with this city, all over again:)

Fill the shoebox....and pass it on!

Posted by Kateri

While I wish I could take full creative credit for this as an original idea.....it is not. And while I was executed to perfection and tailored around the couple's wedding day gospel readings, I got this idea from another photographer and finally had the opportunity to try it!

Every photographer will tell you that they have spent more than a few (ok, countless) hours previewing the work of other fellow photogs. It is a minor obsession, but it makes us better. I for one am a member of several major photo organizations and online digital photog communities- these are central hubs where we photographers can publicly display our work for both criticism & praise. Sharing our knowledge and creativity helps each of us perform to our highest standard, and keeps ideas fresh & new with each event.

I know most of you brides are no different. Five years ago when I was deep in the midst of my own wedding planning, I had a whole section in my coveted "Wedding Binder" that was globs of photos I had cut out of bridal mags that for me were ideal wedding shots.

Besides hoard these cut outs and look at them again and again as the excitement for my own big day mounted...I also shared them....with the one person who could make those cut outs a reality on my big day: my photographer. In fact, I actually arrived at my first photography consult while still in the interview phase with a handful of cut outs that to me represented the kind of photography I desired for my big day.

I encourage ALL of you to do this throughout your wedding planning! Just as you will hand your DJ a master list of favorite & special songs (along with the do-not-play-this list:), it is equally important to convey your ideas to your photographer! ESPECIALLY if you spot a great photographic moment that you would like to make possible on your big day.

So start clipping, dog earing and saving to your internet file folder all the amazing shots that capture your spirit and imagination...and forward them to me, your photographer!! It gives me an inner glimpse into your personality and the aspects of your wedding that will be most important to you....and will add that additional creative edge to your pics. We photographers are proud to see our work get attention and know when certain images make an impact. An image is only as original as the people in it....and I guarantee the more creative you are in the planning process, the more creative we will be together as a team on your wedding day! I love brides who are excited about the creative process!

This photo has gotten many accolades in my photog communities....three photographers emailed me the same day I uploaded it to let me know that they are adding this pose to their repertoire! Sharing makes the world go round:)
